Pacific northwest journalist

I’ve been writing and editing for a living since I was a young reporter in Montana; now I’m looking to use those skills outside of a newsroom setting. In my free time, I’m reading, watching movies, running, tending to the insane demands of two cats, or listening to music (although my hopes of learning to play the saxophone remain on hold).

My Career

My journalism jobs include stints as the editor of the Corvallis Gazette-Times and the Albany Democrat-Herald, where my duties included writing editorials and editing the opinion pages of the newspapers, supervising and writing for the papers’ arts-and-entertainment section and selecting “Breaking Cat News” for the comics page, a decision I don’t regret. My years as a working journalist also included work as a reporter and editor at the Missoulian newspaper in Missoula, Montana. I was serving as the Missoulian’s editor when I was named the publisher of the Gazette-Times in 2005; in the mid-valley, I managed to work my way back down to editor in the space of just a few years. I’m working now as a freelance writer and editor. My recent volunteer resume includes work for Unity Shelter, Safe Camp, the Corvallis Repertory Singers and First Congregational United Church of Christ.

One of my favorite assignments in 2020 was working with the Corvallis Public Schools Foundation to show how it assisted hundreds of families in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. It’s the kind of story that makes a difference in a community — and that’s the kind of story I love to do.

Hiring Mike was the best decision we made in 2020. Never have I had the privilege of working with such a skilled, savvy, and professional writer. Mike conducted interviews and crafted stories that enabled us to get our message out into the community and gain hundreds of new supporters at a pivotal moment. The most valuable investment we could have made this year, hands down.
