“365 Boxes:” Day 51

by | Feb 20, 2023 | "365 Boxes" | 2 comments

I had a feeling that today would be a busy day for work, so I set aside what I thought would be an easy “box.” And, although it lived up that expectation, it still raises questions.

Box 52: Monday, Feb. 20, 2023

CONTENTS: This is exactly what it looks like: It’s one of those produce trays that you find at the bottom of your refrigerator. Except it has no produce inside. And it’s no longer in a refrigerator. What’s inside? Old credit card offers. Instructions for a periodontal appointment I had nearly 13 years ago. A copy of the Corvallis Vision 2020 document. A history of the Children’s Farm Home. Two old invoices from the Toyota dealership. How old, you ask? They’re from John & Phil’s.

DISPOSITION: Although it’s fun to remember that the color of our Camry isn’t silver but rather “lunar mist” and the color of our blue Prius actually is “seaside pearl,” I’ll recycle most of these documents. But we’re ignoring the big question: How is it that I still have a produce drawer from a refrigerator? I seem to recall that we had a fridge that broke down beyond repair a few years ago and we bought a new one. But did I decide to keep the produce drawer from the old fridge? And for what purpose? This is the question that I frequently confront during “365 Boxes:” What was I thinking? And what should I do with it now? See if they’ll take one-off produce drawers at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore? Use it as a planter? Use it to store the apple harvest from the backyard? (That last one makes a little bit of sense.) I’ll throw this question to my readers: What’s the best and highest use now for this produce drawer?

  1. I’m not sure I’d use the old produce drawer for harvested apples. Old plastic milk cartons (with holes in the sides) work better for us because they allow air circulation. I suppose it depends on where, how, and how long you’ll be storing the apples before using or processing them. I use my old produce doors as mini “filing cabinets” etc. One of them holds a LOT of seed packets.

  2. Use it to store the apples. It is strong enough to hold them. Also, if they get messy it would be easy to clean out. Downside is that it is clear and sun get in which might harm the apples.
Other option is to use it to start plants in from seed. Cover the top area with plastic wrap and you have a terrarium to grow the plants in.
