Mid-valley writers fared well in the nominations for 2022’s Oregon Book Awards, which were announced on Monday. Here’s the local rundown:

Two Corvallis writers earned nominations for the Frances Fuller Victor Award for General Nonfiction: Oregon State University history professor Jacob Darwin Hamblin was nominated for his book “The Wretched Atom: America’s Global Gamble with Peaceful Nuclear Technology” (Oxford University Press). And author and philosopher Kathleen Dean Moore earned a nomination for “Earth’s Wild Music: Celebrating and Defending the Songs of the Natural World” (Counterpoint Press).

Gabi Snyder of Corvallis was nominated for the Eloise Jarvis McGraw Award for Children’s Literature for “Listen.”

David Biespiel of Portland, who serves as the poet-in-residence at Oregon State University, was nominated for the Sara Winnemucca Award for Creative Nonfiction for “A Place of Exodus: Home, Memory, and Texas” (Kelson Books).

Two books published by the Oregon State University Press also won nominations in the creative nonfiction category: Mary Emerick, a writer who lives in Joseph, was nominated for “The Last Layer of the Ocean: Kayaking through Love and Loss on Alaska’s West Coast;” and Tina Ontiveros of Hood River was nominated for “rough house: a memoir.”

Another book from the OSU Press, Hops: Historic Photographs of the Oregon Hopscape,” by Kenneth I. Helphand of Eugene, was nominated for the Frances Fuller Victor Award for General Nonfiction.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for Monday, April 25 at Portland Center Stage at The Armory; tickets are available through the website of Literary Arts, which puts on the event. Click here for the full list of nominees.
